Data Model Working Group Charter
-Draft-

Purpose

The primary goal of the SPASE Data Model Working Group is to identify and describe useful and practical meta-data and protocol standards to be used in the implementation of a distributed, heterogeneous, mega-scale archive system with search and retrieval functionality. In addition, the Data Model Group will design and implement an extensible, cross-discipline data dictionary/thesaurus for use by SPASE.

Scope

The SPASE Data Model Working Group is to provide technical advice, recommendations and detailed documentation of data models for use by SPASE. This includes:

  1. Identify and describe useful and practical standards for use by SPASE in the following areas:
    • Meta-data
    • Transport protocols
    • User-to-system and system-to-system messaging.
  2. Implement an extensible, cross-discipline data dictionary.

Documentation produced by the Data Model Group should be adequate for use in the implementation of prototype or proof-of-concept systems. The Data Model Group is to brief the Technical Group on all activities of the Data Model Group to help insure that implementations created by the Technical Group meet accepted data models.

Authority

The Data Model Working Group evaluates and recommends data models for use by SPASE. Members of the working group will participate in the SPASE project to the extent directed by their respective principal investigators or responsible managers.

Membership

Individuals participating in the Data Model Working Group
are chosen by the Steering Committee and will contribute

This will be submitted to the overall SPASE team for review before the next meeting of the Data Model Working Group. Comments on the activities will be discussed at the general SPASE teleconferences or meetings. Communication between members of the Data Model Working Group may be through teleconference, e-mail or face-to-face.
